Sleeping Beauty (1959)

Maleficent

Original production animation drawing pencil on untrimmed animation sheet, image size: 9.5" x 6.5"
This original rough animation drawing of Maleficent was created by a Disney animator in development of a scene in Walt Disney's Technirama animated feature.
The scene is set in King Stefan's castle during the celebration of the birth of Princess Aurora.

When Maleficent unexpectedly joins the festivities, Merryweather blurts out that she was not invited because "you weren't wanted."
Maleficent feigns embarrassment and says to the king and queen: "Well, in that event, I'd best be on my way."

The evil fairy's raven also appears in the scene and was animated on a separate level.
Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney's master animators known as his Nine Old Men, supervised the animation of this scene.
The animator wrote the designation "46" at lower right to indicate this original's place in the scene; the name of the king "Stephen" is written at the top.
